Clymene Enterprises conducts conservation, education, and public awareness activities on behalf of marine mammals. Our primary goal is to help prevent the extinction of endangered species, and also to encourage government agencies to provide adequate protection for marine mammals so that long-term persistence of healthy marine mammal populations can be maintained.
Since 2009, Clymene Enterprises has worked with the non-profit ¡VIVA Vaquita! on efforts to prevent the impending extinction of the vaquita (Phocoena sinus), a small porpoise species endemic to the northern Gulf of California, Mexico, which is being decimated by gillnet mortality. The vaquita is currently the world’s most endangered marine mammal species, with an estimated <20 individuals left in the wild, and none in captivity. More information on ¡VIVA Vaquita! and its activities can be found at www.vivavaquita.org.
Dr. Jefferson also gives several public lectures on marine mammal conservation annually, and occasionally acts as a naturalist on whale-watching and marine ecotourism trips in various parts of the world. He has authored several popular articles on marine mammals to help raise awareness related to these animals.
